ART AND STAGECRAFT CLASSES
Making Light Productions offers inclusive art and stagecraft classes for children and teens in Tallahassee. Students create costumes, props, scenery, stage makeup, artwork, and more while learning the skills that bring productions to life. Whether they enjoy painting, building, designing, or creating with their hands, these classes encourage imagination, craftsmanship, and collaboration.

Arts & Crafts | Ages 5–18 | Thursdays at 4:30 PM
Students explore painting, drawing, sculpture, and a variety of creative techniques through fun, hands-on projects. The class introduces artistic fundamentals while giving students room to experiment with materials, develop their own ideas, and create work they are excited to take home.

Homeschool Stagecraft & Costuming | Ages 10–18 | Tuesdays at 12:30 PM
Homeschool students explore the visual and technical elements that bring theatrical productions together. Through hands-on projects, students learn about costume design, props, scenic design, stagecraft, dramaturgy, and production planning.

Students build practical creative skills while learning how different design areas work together to support a production. No previous theatre, sewing, or stagecraft experience is required.

Sewing 1: Fundamentals & Essentials | Ages 12 through adult | Mondays at 5:00 PM
Learn to sew in a welcoming, hands-on class designed for beginners. Students learn how to operate a sewing machine, thread a needle, sew by hand, attach buttons, select appropriate tools and materials, and complete original projects.
Sewing 1 gives students the foundational skills and confidence needed to begin creating and repairing clothing, accessories, costumes, and other fabric projects. No previous sewing experience is required.

Sewing 2: Construction Techniques | Ages 12 through adult | Tuesdays at 5:00 PM
Students build on their foundational sewing skills while learning how individual pieces come together to create finished garments and theatrical costumes. The class explores pattern reading, fabric selection, machine sewing, hand stitching, construction techniques, fitting, and finishing details.

Projects may include wearable pieces, accessories, and costumes connected to Making Light productions. Students need a strong foundation in beginner sewing techniques.

Stagecraft 1: Intro to Props | Ages 8–18 | Mondays at 6:00 PM
Students learn how theatrical props are imagined, designed, built, painted, and finished through creative hands-on projects. They may make fake food, magical objects, faux animals, prop weapons, and other unusual items inspired by live theatre.

This introductory class builds creativity, problem-solving, tool safety, and practical construction skills. No previous prop-making or stagecraft experience is required.
​
Stagecraft 2: Prop Shop | Ages 12–18 | Wednesdays at 5:30 PM
Students with previous prop-making experience take on more advanced builds, including pieces created for Making Light productions. Projects may include large-scale props, special effects, unusual scenic elements, and detailed objects designed to meet the needs of a show.
​
Students strengthen their skills in planning, construction, painting, finishing, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. At least one semester of prop-making experience is required.

Stage Makeup 1: Essentials | Ages 10–17 | Thursdays at 5:30 PM
Students explore the fundamentals of makeup for everyday looks, stage performance, and beginner special effects. Through hands-on projects, they learn essential application techniques and discover how makeup can communicate character, mood, age, and story.

This class is designed for beginners and students who want to refresh their foundational skills. No previous makeup experience is required.

Stage Makeup 2: Design & Effects | Ages 12–17 | Wednesdays at 7:30 PM
Students build on their existing makeup skills through more advanced beauty techniques, theatrical effects, and original makeup design. They create looks for stage performances, characters, and photo shoots while learning how color, texture, and design choices support storytelling.

This class is designed for students with previous makeup or face-painting experience who are ready to develop their own artistic style.
